The content of a file reveals what was written. Metadata can reveal context about how, when and in which environment that file was produced or modified.
When a file’s origin matters, its traces matter too.
In Brazil, metadata, hash codes, extraction records and other technical information already appear in judicial discussions involving authenticity, integrity and chain of custody of digital evidence.
Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ) itself has rulings that discuss the presence — or absence — of these elements when weighing digital evidence.
